How to Use ChatGPT for SEO
ChatGPT is strong at the language parts of SEO and weak at the factual ones. This page sorts nine tasks by fit, walks through one, and sets out Google's rules.
Short answer
ChatGPT is useful for the language side of SEO: grouping queries, drafting titles for review, outlining pages and checking clarity. It is unreliable for facts, live keyword data and unchecked publishing. Google accepts AI-assisted content that is accurate and useful, but mass-produced pages with no added value can breach its scaled content abuse policy. This page covers 9 tasks.
Where ChatGPT helps and where it fails
ChatGPT predicts likely wording. Google's guidance on generative AI content puts it the same way: models predict a likely sequence of words and can be wrong. That single fact decides which SEO jobs suit it.
In our October 2026 pull of DataForSEO's AI prompt estimates for the US, "chatgpt for seo" came to roughly 3,195 modelled prompts a month against about 390 Google searches. These are modelled estimates for top terms only, but they suggest many people ask an assistant how to use an assistant.
| # | Task | Fit | How to use it | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Group a list of search queries by intent | Good | Paste a Search Console export and ask for groups | That each group matches a real page |
| 2 | Draft title and description options | Good | Ask for several, with character limits | Length, accuracy and that the keyword is natural |
| 3 | Outline a page from customer questions | Good | Give the questions and audience | That the outline adds something competitors lack |
| 4 | Read a draft for unclear sentences | Good | Ask where a first-time reader would get lost | Whether the fixes change meaning |
| 5 | Write spreadsheet formulas or regex for SEO jobs | Good | Describe the data and the result | Test on five rows by hand |
| 6 | Summarize pages you paste in | Fair | Use for your own notes on sources | Do not copy text, and verify against the source |
| 7 | Suggest internal links | Fair | Give it page titles and URLs | Relevance, and that the targets exist |
| 8 | Report keyword volume or difficulty | Poor | Avoid it | It has no live data; use a tool that does |
| 9 | Write finished articles to publish | Poor | Avoid it | Facts, originality and Google's spam policy |
A worked example: Search Console export to a to-do list
This example is illustrative. The queries and results are invented.
- Export 200 queries for a service page from Search Console, with impressions and clicks.
- Paste the list into ChatGPT with a prompt like this:
Here are search queries for a physiotherapy clinic page in Limassol.
Group them by what the searcher wants (price, booking, symptoms, comparison).
For each group give a representative query and say whether a single page
could answer it or whether it needs its own section. Do not invent numbers.
- Review the output against the data. A typical result might be four groups: price (31 queries), booking (22), symptoms (84) and comparison (13).
- Turn each group into a section heading and an answer-first opening sentence, using the pattern in what is answer engine optimization.
- Check each group's impressions in Search Console yourself. The model should not be the source of any number.
The value is time saved on sorting. The decisions, the facts and the final text are yours.
Five prompt patterns that save time
These are templates, not magic wording. Replace the bracketed parts with your own details, and always give the assistant your facts instead of asking it to produce them.
- Cluster: "Group these queries by what the searcher wants. For each group, name the page that should answer it. Do not invent volumes."
- Rewrite for the opening: "Here is a section and the question it should answer. Rewrite the first two sentences so the answer comes first. Keep every fact exactly as written."
- Gap check: "Here are three questions customers ask and my page text. List which questions the text does not answer, and quote the sentence that comes closest."
- Title options: "Write six title options under 60 characters for this page. The page is about [topic] for [audience]. Do not use words from this banned list: [list]."
- Formula help: "I have a spreadsheet with columns A to D holding [data]. Write a formula that returns [result], and explain each part so I can test it."
The second and third patterns are the most useful, because they use your own text and your own facts. The model only reorders and spots gaps.
How it fails
Know the failure modes so you can spot them quickly.
- Confident numbers from nowhere. Ask for search volume and you will get a figure. It is not data.
- Invented sources. A model can produce a plausible citation to a page that does not exist. Open every source yourself.
- Out-of-date rules. Tax rates, regulations and platform features change. Check these against the official source.
- Smooth sameness. Unedited output reads like everyone else's. That is a quality problem and, at scale, a policy one.
- Silent rewrites. When asked to tidy a paragraph, a model may change a figure. Compare before and after line by line.
What Google says about AI-assisted content
Google's guidance, updated in October 2026, is consistent:
- Generative AI can be useful for researching a topic and for adding structure to original content.
- Content produced with AI must still meet Search Essentials and the spam policies.
- Using AI tools to generate many pages that add no value for users can break the scaled content abuse policy.
- Manual fact-checking and review before publishing are critical, and that includes titles, meta descriptions, structured data and image alt text.
- If content is generated automatically, consider telling readers how it was made.
Google's separate guide for AI features also says content does not need to be written differently for AI, and warns that mass-producing pages for query variations in order to manipulate rankings breaks its scaled content abuse policy.
Habits that keep it safe
- Give it your facts. Paste in your own price list, process and data, and ask it to structure them. Do not ask it to supply facts.
- Keep a human sign-off. One named person approves every published page.
- Protect customer data. Do not paste personal data into a tool without checking its data terms. For Cyprus sites, our GDPR guide is a starting point.
- Keep a changelog. Note which pages used AI help, so you can audit later.
- Do not outsource the point of view. Google's guide asks for first-hand experience and original detail. A model has neither.
Doing SEO for ChatGPT is a separate job

Frequently asked questions
Can I use ChatGPT for SEO?
Yes, as an assistant. It helps with grouping queries, drafting titles and outlines, rewording unclear text and writing spreadsheet formulas. It cannot supply live search volumes or verified facts, so you need real data tools and a person to check the output.
How to use ChatGPT for SEO content?
Use it for research questions, outlines and a first read for clarity, then add your own facts, examples and sources. Check every figure and claim. Google's guidance says to review AI-assisted content before publishing, including titles and descriptions.
How to do SEO for ChatGPT?
That is a different task: making your site visible in ChatGPT's answers. It starts with letting OpenAI's search crawler reach your pages and writing specific, sourced passages. Our guide to ranking in ChatGPT sets out the options and the evidence.
Will Google penalize content written with ChatGPT?
Google does not ban AI-assisted content. It says content must meet its quality guidance and spam policies, and that producing many pages that add no value for users can break the scaled content abuse policy. How a page was made matters less than whether it helps readers.
