Website Maintenance Cost
Maintenance is the cost people forget to budget. This guide shows what it includes, what it costs on different kinds of site and how much you can safely do yourself.
Short answer
Website maintenance typically costs EUR 150 to 360 a year on a builder, where the platform is hosted for you, and EUR 360 to 2,160 for a self-hosted brochure site on a care plan of 1 to 2 hours a month at EUR 30 to 90 an hour, plus hosting. Stores need 3 to 6 hours a month, on our assumptions.
What does website maintenance include?
Maintenance is the routine work that keeps a live site working, safe and findable. The list below shows what a proper plan covers and how often. Anything marked "you" is realistic for an owner with an hour a month.
| Task | How often | Who |
|---|---|---|
| Update core software, themes and plugins | Monthly, sooner for security fixes | Specialist on self-hosted sites. The vendor on hosted builders |
| Back up files and the database, with a copy away from the server | Daily or weekly, and before each update | Specialist or host |
| Test forms, checkout and email delivery | Monthly | You |
| Check speed against Core Web Vitals | Quarterly | Specialist |
| Review Search Console errors and broken links | Monthly | You or specialist |
| Review user accounts and passwords | Quarterly | You |
| Renew domain, hosting and licences | Yearly | You |
| Check cookie notice, privacy text and accessibility | Yearly | You with advice |
| Edit text, prices and images | As needed | You |
On backups, WordPress Learn describes backing up files and database, advises a backup before updating core, themes or plugins, and recommends a copy separate from your web server. For speed, web.dev sets the "good" targets at the 75th percentile of visits: largest content in 2.5 seconds or less, interaction response of 200 milliseconds or less, layout shift of 0.1 or less.
What does maintenance cost on each type of site?
It costs a plan fee on a hosted builder and paid hours on a self-hosted site. The hours below are our planning assumptions, priced at EUR 30 to 90 an hour, a band explained in our guide to the cost of building a website.
| Site type | What you pay | Hours a month | Yearly cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosted builder, brochure site | Plan fee | Your own, about 1 | Squarespace Basic EUR 157 and Core EUR 243. Wix Light USD 213 and Core USD 357 |
| Self-hosted brochure site | Hosting plus care plan | 1 to 2 | Care EUR 360 to 2,160, plus hosting |
| Self-hosted store | Hosting, care plan, extensions | 3 to 6 | Care EUR 1,080 to 6,480, plus hosting and extensions |
The builder prices are the entry and middle plans shown by Squarespace (annual billing, shown with estimated VAT) and Wix (yearly billing, USD, varying by location) in November 2026, multiplied by 12. Hours on a builder are yours, because the vendor runs the platform and you maintain your content.
What are the hard costs besides time?
Three items recur on a self-hosted site, and all vary.
- Hosting. WooCommerce's pricing page puts hosting for most stores at USD 25 to 350 a month, rising with traffic and performance needs. WordPress.com's managed plans, which include hosting, ranged from USD 8 a month (Premium) to USD 25 a month (Business) on annual billing in November 2026, which gives a reference of USD 96 to 300 a year for a small site.
- Paid extensions. WooCommerce lists USD 29 to 299 a year per extension. A store with three to six paid extensions therefore carries USD 87 to 1,794 a year.
- Domain. The domain renews yearly at your registrar's price. Some plans include a free domain for the first year only, so the renewal can be a surprise.
Worked example: a WordPress brochure site (illustrative)
This example is illustrative and uses the assumptions above. A 10-page brochure site on managed WordPress hosting with a monthly care plan of 1 to 2 hours:
| Item | Low case | High case |
|---|---|---|
| Managed hosting, reference only | USD 96 | USD 300 |
| Care plan: 12 to 24 hours a year | EUR 360 (12 h at EUR 30) | EUR 2,160 (24 h at EUR 90) |
| Domain renewal | Your registrar's price | Your registrar's price |
Treating a dollar as roughly a euro, that is about EUR 450 in the lowest case and more than EUR 2,400 in the highest. The high case describes a specialist rate and twice the hours. Most owners can reduce the bill by doing the "you" tasks in the table above and buying specialist time only for updates, backups and speed.
What can you safely do yourself?
Do the content edits, the monthly form test, the renewal calendar and the Search Console check. Pay for updates, restoring a backup, security response and speed work on any site where an outage costs you money. A useful rule is to ask what a failed update would cost you in a day. If the answer is a day of lost orders, pay someone, or use a hosted platform. Our comparison of Shopify and WooCommerce shows how that choice changes the upkeep.
What should a maintenance plan say?
Ask for these in writing:
- Hours included each month, and what an extra hour costs.
- Which tasks are covered and which are excluded.
- Backup frequency, where copies are kept and how long.
- Whether a restore is tested.
- Response time if the site goes down.
- A short monthly report.
- That you hold the logins to hosting, domain and the site's admin.
- Notice period if you cancel.
Is maintenance a capital cost?
Generally not. Under the IFRS interpretation SIC-32, as summarized by RSM, operating-stage costs after the site is live are expensed as incurred, while some development-stage costs may be capitalized. This is general information, not accounting advice, so ask your accountant how your framework treats it.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to run a website each year?
On a builder, roughly EUR 150 to 360 in plan fees at the entry and middle plans we checked. On a self-hosted brochure site, hosting plus a care plan adds up to roughly EUR 460 to 2,460 a year on our planning assumptions.
How much will a website cost to maintain?
It depends on the platform and the stakes. A brochure site needs about 1 to 2 hours a month of updates, backups and checks. A shop needs more because a failed update stops sales. Price it as hours multiplied by the rate.
Do I need a website maintenance plan?
Yes if your site is self-hosted and brings in business, because updates, backups and security checks need someone responsible. Not if you use a hosted builder, where the vendor runs the platform and you only maintain your own content.
How much does a website builder cost per year?
Entry plans were about EUR 157 a year on Squarespace Basic with annual billing and USD 213 on Wix Light with yearly billing, as shown in November 2026. Online selling needs higher plans, and prices vary by location.
