How to Appear in Google AI Overviews
There is no form to fill in. This page covers what makes a page eligible, what moves the odds a little, and how to see where you stand today.
Short answer
You cannot apply to appear in Google AI Overviews. Google says no special optimization is needed: a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and even then inclusion is not guaranteed. In Ahrefs' 2026 data, 37.9% of cited URLs ranked in the top 10, so a top-10 ranking is not required to be cited.
You cannot apply, but you can check eligibility
Google documents the conditions for being linked from AI Overviews and AI Mode. They are short, and they are the same conditions as for ordinary Search.
| Condition | Where it comes from | How to check it |
|---|---|---|
| The page is indexed | Google's AI features documentation | URL Inspection in Search Console |
| The page can be shown with a snippet | Same documentation | Look for nosnippet, max-snippet:0 or data-nosnippet on the content you want quoted |
| The content is crawlable text | Google's generative AI guide | View the page without scripts, and read robots.txt |
| Your site has not been excluded from generative AI features | Google's guide says inclusion is required in Search Console | Review the Search generative AI setting in your property |
| The query actually triggers an AI Overview | Observed, not documented | Search it yourself, as described below |
Even when every box is ticked, Google states that indexing and serving are not guaranteed. Anyone who promises a place in AI Overviews is promising something Google itself does not.
Read the fourth row with care. We took it from Google's guide and the Search Console help page for the generative AI report, which notes the report may not show if a site is excluded from these features. Check your own property's settings, because the interface may differ.
What probably moves the odds
These are inferences from Google's guidance and from outside studies. They are not rules.
Cover the sub-questions. Google says AI features can use query fan-out, which means running several related searches at once and combining what they return. A query about getting rid of weeds, for example, may spawn searches about herbicides, chemical-free methods and prevention. A page that answers the main question and its likely follow-ups gives the system more to pick from. Google also warns against separate pages written purely to match fan-out variations.
Be specific where others are generic. Google's guide asks for non-commodity content: first-hand detail, original data, a clear point of view. Pew's analysis of cited sources found Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit at the top and government sites over-represented, which suggests generic pages face tough competition from authoritative ones. Specificity is the realistic edge.
Rank where you reasonably can. In Ahrefs' March 2026 analysis, 37.9% of cited URLs ranked in the top 10, 31.2% ranked 11 to 100 and 31.0% were outside the top 100. The earlier 76% figure (July 2025) came from a smaller dataset, an older AI Overviews model and a different parsing method. A top-10 ranking is not required to be cited. The data is from Ahrefs' own tool.
Write the kind of query that triggers one. Pew found summaries on 8% of one- or two-word searches and 53% of searches with ten words or more. Question phrasing produced them more often than short keywords.
How often do AI Overviews appear?
It depends on the query set, and no one figure applies to you. Pew measured 18% of 68,879 US searches in March 2025. In our October 2026 sample of 33 commercial and informational results pages, Google AI Overviews appeared on all 33, including "seo limassol", and a re-test of 10 showed a real AI answer first each time. Our sample is small and chosen around our own topics. The two figures differ because the query sets, countries and dates differ, so test your own queries.
A 10-minute check of where you stand
- List ten queries a customer would use, including two long, question-style ones.
- Search each in a private window, from the country you sell to.
- Note whether an AI Overview appears and which sites it links.
- Write down whether your page is among them, and whether the overview says anything wrong about you.
- In Search Console, open the generative AI performance report if your property has one. It shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country and device. It does not report clicks, and it may not appear if your site has had too few impressions.
- Repeat in a month. The set will move.

If you are eligible and still not appearing
Eligibility is necessary, not sufficient. Work down this table in order. Most rows cost nothing to check.
| What you see | Likely reason | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| No AI Overview for your target query | The query does not trigger one, or not in your country | Try the question-style version of the query, and test from the right country |
| An AI Overview appears and cites others, not you | Your page is less specific, or it does not answer the sub-questions | Compare the cited pages with yours and note which facts they give that you do not |
| You appear for some queries and then disappear | Normal variation. Ahrefs describes the feature as probabilistic | Re-run weekly for a month before concluding anything |
| The generative AI report shows no data | Too few impressions, or the site is excluded from the features | Check the property's Search generative AI setting, and give it time |
| Impressions rise but clicks do not | The summary answers the question without a visit | Add something a summary cannot supply, such as a calculator, a form or a live availability check |
| The overview says something wrong about you | An outdated page, listing or profile is being used | Correct the source, then leave feedback on the result |
Notice that none of the rows says "add schema" or "add llms.txt". Neither is documented to help, and Google says its generative features need neither.
What not to do
- Do not publish dozens of near-duplicate pages for query variations.
- Do not buy mentions or fake reviews. Google's guide says manufactured mentions are less helpful than they look.
- Do not rely on llms.txt or special markup. Google's guide says neither is needed.
- Do not block Googlebot or add nosnippet to pages you want quoted.

Frequently asked questions
How to get AI Overviews to show your site?
Make sure the page is indexed, can show a snippet, and answers the question clearly. Google lists no other steps and no application. Whether it links your page depends on the query and on systems you cannot see or influence directly.
How to rank in Google AI Overviews?
There is no separate ranking. Rank well for the topic if you can, but cover the related sub-questions as well, because Google may run several searches at once. Ahrefs found many cited pages ranked outside the top 10.
Does ranking first guarantee a link in an AI Overview?
No. Ahrefs found that about 62% of cited URLs in its March 2026 sample did not rank in the top 10. The study counts where cited pages ranked; it does not measure how often top-10 pages are cited. Google says indexing and serving are not guaranteed for any page.
Can I stop my site appearing in AI Overviews?
Google says site owners can limit what is shown with snippet controls such as nosnippet and max-snippet, or with noindex. Both reduce your visibility in normal Search too, so decide carefully, and test one page before applying a rule sitewide.
