How to Optimize Content for AI Overviews

This is the hands-on page. Take one existing page, spend about 45 minutes on it, and use the checklist at the end to decide whether it is done.

Short answer

To optimize content for AI Overviews, edit each section so it opens with the direct answer, add one sourced fact per section, cut filler, and confirm the page is indexed and snippet-eligible. Google says no special format, files or markup are required. One page edit takes about 45 minutes, and results vary between checks.

The 45-minute edit

Pick one page that already matters, such as a service page or a guide that brings enquiries. Work through these steps in order.

  1. Minutes 0 to 5: choose three questions. Open Search Console, filter the page's queries, and pick the three that a buyer would ask. Write them down.
  2. Minutes 5 to 15: lead with the answer. For each question, find the section that handles it. Rewrite its first sentence to give the verdict, number or condition. Move the explanation after it.
  3. Minutes 15 to 25: add one checkable fact per section. A price range, a duration, a named regulation, a date. If you did not produce the figure, name the source in the sentence.
  4. Minutes 25 to 30: cut. Delete sentences that could appear on any competitor's page, such as "we are passionate about quality". Remove claims you cannot support.
  5. Minutes 30 to 35: check eligibility. Confirm the URL is indexed, the content is plain text, and nothing carries nosnippet.
  6. Minutes 35 to 45: log the baseline. Record the page, the three questions, whether an AI Overview appears for each and whether you are cited.

Worked example

This example is illustrative. The wording and figures are invented to show the pattern.

Text
Question How long does a 10-page business website take to build?
Before "It depends on many factors, and every project is unique. Get in touch and we will discuss your needs."
After "A 10-page brochure site usually takes four to six weeks from signed brief to launch, if you supply text and images in the first two weeks. Delays nearly always come from late content, not from development. Online shops and booking systems take longer and are quoted separately."

The second version commits to a range, states the condition that drives it, and names the exceptions. An AI feature can quote it whole, and a buyer can plan around it. The first gives neither a system nor a person anything to use.

A second example: a pricing section

Pricing is where the "after" version is hardest to write, because it forces a decision. This example is illustrative too.

Text
Question How much does a hygiene appointment cost in Limassol?
Before "Our prices are competitive. Contact us for a personalized quote."
After "A routine hygiene appointment at our clinic costs EUR 60 for 40 minutes. A deep clean for heavy build-up costs EUR 95. Prices include the examination and exclude X-rays, which are EUR 15 each when needed."

The figures are invented. The pattern is what matters: a price, a unit of time, the condition that changes the price, and what is excluded. If you cannot publish a single price, publish a range and say what moves it. Even "from EUR 60, depending on the treatment" gives the reader and the system something to work with.

Edits that backfire

  • Stuffing facts into one paragraph. A passage with eight figures reads as a list and is hard to quote. One or two per paragraph is easier to use.
  • Burying the answer under a story. Open with the answer, and keep the story for after.
  • Copying a competitor's phrasing. It adds nothing a system could not find elsewhere, and Google's guide asks for non-commodity content.
  • Changing the date without changing the page. An honest update date helps. A false one erodes trust.
  • Hiding content in tabs that load late. If the answer needs a click or a script to appear, a crawler may not see it.

Pass or fail checklist

Check Pass if
Section openers The first sentence of each section answers the heading
Specifics Each section has a figure, date, condition or named source
Standalone sense You can quote any paragraph without the paragraph before it
Filler No sentence would fit unchanged on a competitor's page
Length Long enough to answer, no longer. There is no ideal length, according to Google
Access Indexed, crawlable, no nosnippet on the content
Honesty Every claim is one you could defend if asked for proof
Freshness The date reflects a real update

A page that fails more than two of these needs more than an AI-focused edit. It likely needs a rewrite, which is outside the scope of this page.

What not to change

Google's guide names several habits that you can leave alone. You do not need to break the page into small chunks, because Google says it can understand multiple topics on one page. You do not need to write a separate version for AI, or to chase every long-tail variation of a query, because the systems understand synonyms and meaning. You do not need new markup or special files for these features.

If you use an AI assistant for the edit, review the output by hand. Google's guidance on generative AI content says to check facts and to review titles, descriptions and structured data, since models predict likely wording and can be wrong.

Check whether it worked

AI Overviews are probabilistic, so wait at least a few weeks before judging. Compare the same queries and the page's impressions in the generative AI report in Search Console. Our guide to tracking AI Overviews explains the routine.

Where to go next

The edit above assumes the page can already appear. If you are unsure, start with how to appear in Google AI Overviews, which covers eligibility. The writing pattern is explained in more depth in what is answer engine optimization. If you would rather hand the job over, our AI search optimization service starts with an audit of your top pages. Choose the page, set a timer for 45 minutes and begin with step one.

Frequently asked questions

How to optimize content for AI Overviews?

Rewrite each section to lead with its answer, add a figure or named source, remove vague claims and keep the page indexable. Google lists no special format for AI Overviews, so these edits are good practice for readers and for any system that quotes you.

Is AI content good for SEO?

It can be, if it is accurate, useful and reviewed by a person. Google allows AI-assisted content but treats mass production of pages that add no value as spam. Using AI to draft is a method; the test is whether readers get something new.

How to rank in AI Overviews?

There is no separate ranking to target. Strengthen the page for the topic, cover the likely follow-up questions on it, and keep facts specific. In Ahrefs' 2026 data, many cited pages ranked outside the top 10.

How to track AI Overviews after an edit?

Note the baseline first, then recheck the same queries after a few weeks and compare with the impressions in Search Console's generative AI report. Results vary run to run, so one check proves little.
