Can I Do SEO Myself?

Most of the work that moves a small business up the results is within an owner's reach. A few jobs are not.

Short answer

Yes. Google says a small local business can probably do much of the SEO work itself. Start with Search Console, a complete Google Business Profile, one clear page per service and a weekly review habit, roughly 90 minutes a week by our estimate. Hand over site moves, custom-code fixes and highly competitive searches.

What an owner can do well

Google's guidance on whether you need an SEO says a small local business can probably do much of the work itself, and points to its own Starter Guide as the place to begin. These eight jobs are the core, and none needs technical skill. Time estimates are ours.

Job Tool Time to set up
Verify the site and read the performance report Google Search Console 30 minutes
Check which pages are indexed A site: search, Search Console 15 minutes
Claim and complete the local listing Google Business Profile 1 to 2 hours
Write one page for each main service Your own site editor 1 to 2 hours per page
Give every page a clear, unique title and description Your site editor 10 minutes per page
Add real photos with descriptive alt text Your site editor 30 minutes
Ask customers for reviews and reply Review link or QR code 30 minutes
Check the site on a phone Your phone 15 minutes

Our website audit checklist puts the first checks into an hour, and the Business Profile checklist covers the local listing.

Your first five hours, in order

The order below follows the same logic as our 90-day plan: measure first, then unblock, then build.

  1. Hour 1. Verify Search Console, then run the site: check and the mobile check from our audit checklist. Write down what you find.
  2. Hour 2. Fix anything that keeps key pages out of Google, such as a leftover noindex setting in your site editor.
  3. Hour 3. Claim and complete your Business Profile, if customers visit you or you visit them.
  4. Hour 4. Rewrite the title and opening paragraph of your most valuable service page, with the answer first.
  5. Hour 5. Create your review link, send it to the last five customers you served and set a weekly reminder.

Stop there for the first week. Measure again after a month, and resist adding tasks until you can see what the first five hours changed.

What to hand over

Some jobs punish mistakes, or need access you cannot safely give yourself.

Job Why to hand it over Warning sign you should not DIY
Moving domains or changing URLs A wrong redirect can remove pages from Google You cannot list your old URLs
Fixing speed on a custom-built site Needs developer changes The report names scripts you do not recognise
Hreflang for several languages One-way tags are ignored You maintain more than two language versions
Competing for broad national searches Takes sustained content and mentions Large brands fill the results
Recovering from a spam or manual action notice The cause may be old links or hacked pages Search Console shows a manual action

This list is short on purpose. Most small sites never need the second column.

A 90-minute weekly routine

Once the basics are done, a weekly slot keeps things moving. This schedule is an estimate, not a benchmark.

Task Minutes
Open Search Console and note impressions, clicks and any errors 15
Send the review link to this week's customers and reply to new reviews 20
Improve or add one page: a clearer title, a better answer, new proof 40
Check the Business Profile for notices, hours and photos 10
Write down what changed and what you plan to do next 5

Put the notes in one document. After three months you will have a record of what you did and what moved, which any adviser you hire later will want to see.

Is your time cheaper than a fee?

Do the sum before you decide. Ninety minutes a week is about 6 hours a month. If your time is worth EUR 50 an hour, that is EUR 300 a month in effort, not counting the first push of five to ten hours. Compare that with a retainer in the range described in our guide to how much SEO should cost. If your hours are worth much more, or you hate the work, paying someone is rational. If your hours are quiet and cheap, DIY wins. The numbers are illustrative; use yours.

Can ChatGPT do it for me?

It can help, with limits. In our October 2026 DataForSEO data, "can i do seo myself" drew an estimated 1,749 AI assistant prompts a month in the US, against about 20 Google searches, so many people are already asking assistants. Google allows generated content, provided it meets its Search Essentials and is accurate. Its spam policies warn against producing many pages mainly to manipulate rankings.

Good uses Poor uses
Drafting an outline you will rewrite Publishing pages you have not read
Suggesting title and description options Inventing prices, statistics or reviews
Turning your notes into plain language Producing dozens of near-identical town pages
Checking your page for unclear sentences Writing facts about your business you have not supplied

Our guide to using ChatGPT for SEO goes into prompts and checks.

Signs it is time to get help

  • Your pages are still not in Google after several weeks and you cannot see why
  • Traffic fell after a change and you cannot trace it
  • You need to edit code to fix what the reports show
  • You are about to redesign, move or merge the site
  • The weekly slot keeps getting skipped

If you want a second pair of eyes before you decide, a one-off review is cheaper than a retainer. Read what a real SEO audit includes so you can judge one, or see how our SEO service works.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do SEO myself?

Yes, for the basics. Google's own advice says a small local business can probably do much of the work itself. Hand over technical jobs you cannot test, such as site moves, redirects on a custom-built site and speed fixes that need a developer.

How many hours a week does DIY SEO take?

Our estimate is about 90 minutes a week once the basics are in place, after a first push of five to ten hours. That is a planning figure, not a study result. Site size and competition change it.

Can I use ChatGPT for SEO?

Yes, for drafting outlines, title options and plain-language rewrites. Google says generated content must meet its Search Essentials, be checked for accuracy and not be mass-produced to manipulate rankings. Never publish unchecked facts, prices or invented statistics.

Which free tools do I need for SEO?

Google Search Console shows how Google sees your site, Google Business Profile manages your local listing, and PageSpeed Insights and the Rich Results Test check speed and structured data. All four come from Google and need no budget.

When should I hire an SEO instead of doing it myself?

Hire when you are redesigning or moving the site, when your site is custom-built and you cannot edit it, when you compete for broad searches that larger firms target, or when your hours cost more than the fee.
