How to Rank on Google Maps
Maps rankings change with the searcher's location, so the useful question is which factors you can move and how to test them honestly.
Short answer
Google ranks local results on 3 factors: relevance, distance and prominence. You can improve relevance and prominence with a verified profile, the right primary category, accurate details, real reviews and a matching website page. You cannot change distance or pay for a higher ranking, so a single rank number misleads.
Your Maps position is not one number
A business does not have one Maps rank. It has a different position for every place a searcher might stand. Google lists distance as one of three factors for local results, so a clinic can come first for someone across the road and fifth for someone two kilometres away.
That makes a single "we rank number two" claim meaningless. Check from several places and write the results down. An illustrative record for a Limassol physiotherapist searching "physiotherapist near me" might look like this.
| Where you stand | Your position | Who is above you |
|---|---|---|
| Outside your own door | 1 | Nobody |
| 1 km east | 3 | Two clinics closer to that spot |
| 1 km west, by the seafront | 6 | Four clinics with more reviews |
| City centre | Not shown | Clinics in the centre |
Ask a friend or colleague to run the same search from different places, or search yourself on a phone as you move. Paid grid tools automate this by simulating searches from a grid of points. They are useful, but the idea is the same: look at a map of positions, not at one number.
What Maps weighs and what you control
Google says relevance, distance and prominence drive local results. Here is each one split into what you can and cannot change.
| Factor | What you can change | What you cannot change |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | Primary and secondary categories, services, description, the website page that matches the profile | What the searcher types |
| Distance | Nothing, apart from keeping the address correct | Where the searcher stands |
| Prominence | Reviews and replies, real mentions and links from other sites | How famous competitors already are |
Whitespark's 2026 survey of 47 local search experts, who scored 187 factors, ranked these first for the map results: primary category, distance to the searcher, keywords in the business name, a physical address in the searched city, and being open at the time of the search. Two of those you control straight away. Make the primary category precise, and make your hours accurate so you appear as open when you are.
The keywords in the name factor is one to leave alone. Google's guidelines say the name must match your real-world name, with no added services or locations. Doing otherwise puts the profile at risk of suspension.
Why you might not appear
Match the symptom to the likely cause before you change anything.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Not shown even for your own name | Profile unverified, suspended or duplicated | Complete verification, read any notice in the profile, remove duplicates |
| Shown for your name but not for the service | Weak relevance: wrong or vague category, thin description | Pick the most specific primary category, describe services, match the website page |
| Shown only when the searcher is very close | Distance is limiting you | Build prominence with reviews and local mentions |
| Competitors with fewer reviews rank above you | Other factors, such as category, closer address or opening hours | Compare how they describe themselves and when they are open |
| Dropped soon after edits | Google may have asked for more information after changes to key details | Check the profile for notices and keep the name, address and category stable |
| Never shown as open | Hours missing or wrong | Set regular and special hours |
If your profile looks fine and still does not appear, our Business Profile checklist covers eligibility rules that quietly disqualify profiles, such as virtual office addresses.
What to do first, in order
- Fix the category. It is the single highest-rated factor in Whitespark's survey, and it takes minutes.
- Correct the hours and the address. Open at the time of the search and an address in the right city are both on the experts' top-five list.
- Ask for reviews every week. Reviews feed prominence, and Whitespark reports that review signals grew in importance in its 2026 edition. The method is in how to get more Google reviews.
- Make the website page match the profile. Same name, address, phone and services, with a clear page for each location.
- Earn a few real mentions. Local suppliers, partner firms, industry bodies and community sites that link to you add prominence. Buying links for rankings breaks Google's spam policies.
- Re-run your location test in eight weeks. That interval is our rule of thumb, not Google's. Compare the table with your first one.
What about AI Overviews?
You cannot "rank" in an AI Overview in the way you rank on a map, but the same quality signals matter. Google's documentation says there are no additional technical requirements: a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. It says you do not need special markup or AI text files, and that AI features' traffic is counted inside the normal Search Console Web report. For tactics and tracking, see our guide on how to appear in Google AI Overviews.
What does not work
- Paying Google or a third party for a better local position
- Fake reviews, paid reviews or reviews traded for discounts
- Fake or borrowed addresses
- Opening several profiles for one premises
- Adding keywords to the name
Each risks suspension, and none changes distance.

Frequently asked questions
How do I rank higher on Google Maps?
Verify your profile, choose the most specific primary category, keep hours and details accurate, collect genuine reviews and publish a matching page on your website. These raise relevance and prominence. You cannot change your distance from the searcher.
Can I pay to rank on Google Maps?
No. Google's Business Profile Help says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Anyone selling guaranteed Maps positions is promising something Google says is not for sale.
Why does my ranking change depending on where I search?
Distance is one of Google's three local ranking factors, so results change with the searcher's location. You can rank first for people nearby and lower for people across town. That is why checking from several places is more honest than quoting one rank.
How many reviews do I need to rank on Google Maps?
Google gives no target number. It says the number and rating of reviews contribute to prominence. Collect genuine reviews steadily and reply to them, rather than chasing a specific count.
How do I rank in Google AI Overviews?
Google says there are no extra technical requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Standard SEO applies, and no special markup or AI text file is needed. AI Overviews appear only when Google judges they add value.
