Can AI Redesign Your Website?

AI can draft layouts, copy and images in minutes. It will not protect your rankings, check your facts or decide what your business needs. Here is where it helps and where a person must decide.

Short answer

AI can draft layouts, headlines and images for a redesign quickly. It will not, by itself, map old URLs, set redirects, protect rankings or verify your facts, so a person must own those. Google allows accurate, useful AI content but can treat mass-produced pages as spam. A human-led redesign typically costs about EUR 2,250 to 12,600.

Which parts of a redesign can AI handle?

AI is useful for first drafts and options, and weak at anything that depends on your private facts or on tests. Use this table to decide what to delegate. The ratings are our judgment from how the tasks work, not measurements.

Task What AI can do What a person must check
Content inventory Summarize and group a page list you paste in That no page with traffic or links is dropped
Layout ideas Offer several page structures quickly That the layout suits your customers and goal
Copy drafts Write headings and body text from a brief Every fact, price, claim and tone choice
Images Generate illustrations and backgrounds Licence terms, accuracy, and that products look like the real thing
Redirect map Propose matches between old and new pages Every redirect, by testing it on the live site
Accessibility Flag some problems with automated tools Keyboard use, labels and contrast, by hand
Speed Suggest causes Measure before and after against Core Web Vitals
Legal text Produce a draft A qualified person, for privacy, cookies and terms

What do AI website builders actually do?

They generate a new site from a prompt. Wix's AI website builder page describes going from a text prompt to a business-ready website, with the AI creating the structure, pages, layout, copy and visuals. You still describe your business, goals and style, then refine the result in an editor. Building is free to start, but connecting a custom domain and collecting payments need a Premium plan, and annual plans include a voucher for one free domain for a year. The page does not describe redesigning an existing site, so treat a builder as a way to start fresh, not as a migration tool.

Ownership matters too. Wix's article on AI-generated sites says that your text, images, product data and blog posts are yours to take, while templates, themes and platform code are licensed to you and generally do not transfer to another platform. Other builders have similar tools, and we have not reviewed them, so read each vendor's terms.

What does Google say about AI-generated content?

Google allows it, with conditions. Its guidance says generative AI can be useful when researching a topic and for adding structure to original content, as long as the result meets its Search Essentials and spam policies. It says models predict likely wording rather than retrieve facts, so it is critical to check and review AI output before publishing, including titles, meta descriptions, structured data and image text. It also says that using AI tools to generate many pages without adding value for users may violate its policy on scaled content abuse, and it suggests giving readers context on how content was produced.

For a redesign, the implication is practical. Do not use AI to generate dozens of near-identical service or location pages. Write fewer pages that say something specific, and check each one.

What is the risk to a site that already ranks?

The main risk is losing the addresses and content that earn traffic. Google's guidance on site moves with URL changes asks for a map of old to new addresses, permanent redirects straight to the equivalent page, redirects kept for at least about a year, and a plan to watch indexing in Search Console. It also warns to expect temporary ranking changes, and says most pages on a small to medium site may take a few weeks to settle.

An AI-generated replacement site usually creates new addresses and new text. Without a redirect map, the links and history of the old addresses go unused. Pages that rank now should be kept, edited by a person and compared with the originals before anything is replaced. Our guide to redesigning without losing SEO walks through the checks.

What is a safe way to use AI in a redesign?

  1. Audit first. Export your pages with traffic and enquiries, and decide what to keep before any tool touches the content.
  2. Use AI for options. Ask for three layouts or three headline sets, then choose with your goal in mind.
  3. Draft, then edit. Treat generated copy as a first draft. Replace generic lines with facts only you know.
  4. Verify every claim. Prices, hours, qualifications and statistics must be checked against your own records.
  5. Keep a human owner for migration. Redirects, indexing and tracking are tested by a person.
  6. Test on a phone. Check speed, forms and checkout yourself.
  7. Record what AI did. A line in your process notes helps if you need to explain how pages were produced.

Should you use AI alone or hire a designer?

Use AI alone when the site is new and small, nothing ranks yet, you will review every page, and the stakes of a wrong sentence are low. Hire a person when the site already earns traffic, sells products, serves more than one language, needs integrations, or makes claims that must be accurate, such as medical, legal or financial statements. A middle path works well: let AI produce drafts, and pay a person for structure, migration, testing and review.

How much does an AI redesign cost?

Drafting can cost nothing. Publishing properly does not. Wix's Light plan was USD 17.77 a month on yearly billing in November 2026, and its page says prices vary by location. The cost that stays is the time spent checking, correcting and migrating. Our guide to the cost of redesigning a website sets out the hours for a human-led project, and the small business redesign guide shows a plan you can follow.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI redesign my website?

It can propose layouts, write draft copy and generate images, and some builders generate a whole new site from a prompt. Redesigning an existing site safely also needs redirects, content checks and testing, which people must do and verify.

Is AI-generated website content bad for SEO?

Not by itself. Google says generative AI is allowed if the content is accurate and helpful, and that it should be fact-checked. Producing many pages with no added value can break its scaled content abuse policy.

How much does an AI website redesign cost?

Drafting can be free. Wix says building is free to start, but a custom domain and online payments need a paid plan, and Wix's Light plan was USD 17.77 a month on yearly billing in November 2026. Human checking time is the cost that remains.

Should I redesign my website with AI or hire a designer?

Use AI alone for a small new site with no rankings to protect and a review of every page. Hire a person when the site earns traffic, sells products, serves several languages or makes claims that must be accurate.
