Website Redesign Services: When, Why and How Much
A redesign is worth paying for when the site is costing you business or cannot do what the business now needs. Here is how to decide, what it costs and how to protect your traffic.
Short answer
Redesign when your website loses enquiries, cannot support new products, or is slow or hard to update. Looking dated alone is a weaker reason. A small business redesign typically costs about EUR 2,250 to 12,600, depending on pages, content and migration work. Protect rankings with a redirect map from every old address to its new one.
Should you redesign your website?
Redesign when the website is the reason you lose business, or when it can no longer carry what you sell. If it merely looks dated, a cheaper refresh usually does the job. This table maps common signals to the response that fits.
| What you see | Likely response |
|---|---|
| Traffic is steady but enquiries or sales have dropped | Fix the page that should convert first. Redesign only if the structure is the cause |
| Pages load slowly on phones | Measure first. Fix images and scripts. Redesign if the template cannot be fixed |
| You need a developer to change a phone number or a price | Move to a platform you can edit |
| You have added a service, a market or a second language | Redesign. The structure no longer matches the business |
| The platform or theme is no longer updated | Rebuild. Unpatched software is a risk |
| The design looks five years old but still converts | Refresh the visuals and keep the structure |
On speed, Google's web.dev sets "good" targets at the 75th percentile of page loads: largest content visible in 2.5 seconds or less, interaction response of 200 milliseconds or less, and layout shift of 0.1 or less. Use those as your test. If the current site passes them and converts, a redesign is a want, not a need.
How often should you redesign a website?
We know of no research that sets a redesign interval, so we do not give one. A calendar rule tells you nothing about your business. Tie the decision to events instead: a new service line, a change in who your customers are, a move into another language, a platform that stops receiving updates, or a site that fails the speed targets above. Review the site once a year against those triggers and decide then.
How much does a website redesign cost?
A typical small business redesign costs about EUR 2,250 to 12,600 on our planning assumptions, shown below. The numbers are illustrative: hours are our assumptions and the EUR 30 to 90 hourly band sits between the lower-cost and UK bands in Clutch's web design pricing guide, which we read in November 2026.
| Scope | Planning hours | At EUR 30 an hour | At EUR 90 an hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visual refresh on the same platform | 20 to 50 | EUR 600 | EUR 4,500 |
| Full redesign, same platform, 8 to 15 pages | 75 to 140 | EUR 2,250 | EUR 12,600 |
| Redesign, new platform, two languages | 150 to 320 | EUR 4,500 | EUR 28,800 |
A redesign adds work a new build does not have. Someone has to inventory every existing page, decide what to keep, map old addresses to new ones, set up and test redirects, and check indexing after launch. Budget 15 to 30 hours for that on top of design and build. Our cost to build a website guide shows how the base hours are built.
If you are the supplier asking how much to charge, price from the new scope. Itemize the audit and migration work, fix the page count and layouts in writing, and treat anything added after sign-off as a change request.
How do you redesign without losing your rankings?
Keep every address that earns traffic or links, and redirect the rest to the closest equivalent page. Google's guidance on site moves with URL changes is specific about how:
- Map old URLs to new ones before you build, page by page.
- Use permanent server-side redirects (301 or 308) straight to the final destination, with no chains.
- Do not send many old pages to the home page. Google advises against redirecting to an irrelevant page.
- Keep the redirects for at least about a year, and update your own internal links to the new addresses.
- Use Search Console. Verify the site, submit the new sitemap and watch old addresses fall and new ones rise.
- Expect temporary movement. Google says rankings can fluctuate during a move, and for a small to medium site most pages may take a few weeks to settle.
Our guide to redesigning without losing SEO and the website migration checklist go through each step in more detail.
Can you capitalize the cost of a website redesign?
Sometimes, and the answer depends on your accounting framework, so this is general information and not accounting advice. Under the IFRS interpretation SIC-32, as summarized by RSM, the stages are treated differently:
- Planning stage: expensed as incurred.
- Application, infrastructure, graphical design and content development: costs that directly prepare the site for use may be capitalized if the IAS 38 recognition criteria are also met.
- Operating stage: expensed as incurred, including advertising and promotion of your own products.
Other frameworks differ, and tax treatment is a separate question. The practical step is to ask your supplier to split the quote by stage, so your accountant can decide line by line.
How do you prepare for a website redesign?
Do these before you ask for quotes. They shorten the project and make quotes comparable.
- Write down what the new site must achieve and how you will measure it.
- Export a list of current pages with the traffic and enquiries each one produces.
- Mark each page keep, improve, merge or delete.
- Collect logins: domain, hosting, analytics, Search Console and any email or form service.
- Gather final text and images, or decide who will produce them.
- List the integrations the site needs, such as booking, payments or a CRM.
- Set a budget range and a launch date you can defend.

How do you announce a website redesign?
Keep it short and put it where customers already look. A line in your next email to customers and a post on your social profiles is enough for most businesses. Make sure the old addresses still work, check that your Google Business Profile points to the right page, and avoid a "coming soon" page on the live address. Customers care that the site works, not that it changed.
Can AI redesign your website?
AI tools can draft layouts and copy, but they do not map redirects, protect rankings or check your business facts. Read can AI redesign your website before you rely on one for an existing site.
What should you do next?
List your pages and what each one earns, then decide whether you need a refresh or a rebuild. If you want a written quote, see our web design service. We quote in writing and do not publish a price list.

Frequently asked questions
How much should a website redesign cost?
For a small business site, typically about EUR 2,250 to 12,600 on our planning assumptions of 75 to 140 hours at EUR 30 to 90 an hour. A simple refresh costs less. A redesign that changes platform and adds a second language costs more.
How often should you redesign your website?
There is no research-backed interval, so we do not give one. Redesign when the site stops supporting the business, for example after a new service, a new market, a failing mobile experience or a platform you can no longer update.
Can you capitalize website redesign costs?
Sometimes. Under the IFRS interpretation SIC-32, planning costs and operating costs are expensed, while development-stage costs may be capitalized if the IAS 38 criteria are met. Local rules differ, so ask your accountant before you decide.
When should I redesign my website?
When enquiries or sales fall for reasons you can trace to the site, when pages fail Core Web Vitals on phones and cannot be fixed, or when your offer has changed so much that the structure no longer fits.
How much should I charge to redesign a website?
Price from the hours the new scope needs, not from the old site. Charge for the audit and redirect work separately from design and build, fix the scope in writing, and price changes after sign-off as extras.
