Website Design Services for Small Business
A good service turns your business into a site that brings enquiries and leaves you in control of it. Here is what should be included, who to hire, and how to judge a cheap quote.
Short answer
Website design services for a small business should include planning, design for desktop and phone, a build you can edit, search basics, launch checks and handover with your own logins. Typical prices run EUR 1,800 to 9,900 for 5 to 8 pages. Rates vary by country and team. Judge any quote by its written scope, not its price.
What should a website design service include?
A complete service delivers seven things, and each should appear in the quote as a line you can check. Use this table as a checklist when you read proposals.
| Stage | What you should receive | How you can tell it was done |
|---|---|---|
| Plan | A page list, a goal for each page, a content outline | You approved a written plan before design started |
| Design | Layouts for desktop and phone | You saw the home page and one inner page on both |
| Build | A site you can edit without a developer | You changed a sentence yourself during training |
| Content | Text and images, or a clear list of what you supply | Each page has an owner and a due date |
| Search and tracking | Page titles, headings, a sitemap, analytics, Search Console | You can see visits and enquiries in your own accounts |
| Launch | Testing on real phones, speed check, redirects if you had an old site | A written launch checklist, signed off by both sides |
| Handover | Logins, design files, licences, a short guide | The domain and hosting are in your name |
If a proposal leaves out one of these, ask whether it is excluded or forgotten. Both are common, and they cost different amounts.
Who should you hire: a freelancer, a studio or an agency?
Hire for fit, not for size. Rates differ by location and team more than by title. Clutch's web design pricing guide, which we read in November 2026, lists average hourly rates of USD 25 to 49 for Spain, Poland, Ukraine and Mexico, USD 50 to 99 for the United Kingdom, and USD 100 to 149 for the United States, Canada and Australia. It also reports lower rates for work done on website builders than for fully custom builds. Cyprus is not listed.
| Supplier | Best for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Freelancer | Small sites with a clear brief and one decision-maker | Single point of failure if they are ill or leave. Ask who holds the accounts |
| Small studio | A site that needs design, build and search work together | Check which people do the work, not only who sells it |
| Larger agency | Several services, multiple markets, formal process | Minimum project sizes and account managers add cost |
| Builder specialist | A Wix, Squarespace or Shopify site set up properly | Lock-in: confirm what you can export if you move |
None of these is better in general. A freelancer with a clear scope can beat an agency on value, and an agency can be right when the project has many moving parts.
What does affordable website design really mean?
Affordable should mean a smaller scope or a faster route, not a thinner service. You can safely save money by using a template, supplying your own text and photos, launching with fewer pages, and adding features later. Avoid saving on phone testing, analytics, redirects from an old site, and ownership of your domain and hosting. Those omissions are cheap on day one and expensive afterwards.
A useful test is to ask three suppliers to quote the same written scope. If one price is far lower, find out which line items it leaves out. Our guide to how much a small business website should cost shows how to set the budget from what the site can earn.
How long does a small business website take?
A small business site is typically a matter of weeks, depending on the number of pages and how quickly content and feedback arrive. Content is the part only you can supply, so it is the step most likely to hold up launch. Agree dates for text, photos and approvals in the proposal. Our step-by-step web design process shows where those dates fall.
What should you ask on the first call?
These questions separate a clear supplier from a vague one.
- Who will do the design and the build, and can I speak to them?
- What do you need from me, and by when?
- Which parts of my quote are fixed and which are estimates?
- Who owns the domain, hosting and design files at the end?
- How do you test on phones, and what speed result will you aim for?
- If I have an old site, how do you protect its rankings?
- What happens if I want changes after sign-off?
- What will year two cost?
On question 5, Google's web.dev sets the "good" targets at the 75th percentile of page loads: largest content visible in 2.5 seconds or less, interaction response of 200 milliseconds or less, layout shift of 0.1 or less. On question 6, Google's site move guidance expects a map of old to new addresses and permanent redirects. A supplier who knows both will answer without hesitation.
What should you prepare before you ask for a quote?
Prepare a one-page brief: what you sell, who buys, what a visitor should do, three sites you like and why, the pages you expect, the content you have, and a budget range. The same information goes into a website redesign RFP, which also works for a new build. Suppliers quote closer to the final price when the brief is specific.
Should you rely on search rankings to choose a supplier in Cyprus?
No, treat them as a thin signal. In our October 2026 analysis of eight Cypriot digital agencies, together they held only 8 relevant top-10 Google rankings for the service keywords we tracked, and the strongest held 4. Data coverage for small sites is a floor, so the true figure may be higher. Many capable suppliers do little to rank for their own services, and ranking says more about marketing effort than about design skill. Ask for live projects, speak to a past customer, and read our guide to choosing a web design company in Cyprus.
When should you not hire a design service?
Do it yourself if the site is a handful of pages, you have time, and a template layout fits. Clutch's August 2025 survey of small businesses reported that DIY builders power 41% of the sites launched in the past year, and it does not publish its sample size. Hire a service when the site is a main source of enquiries or when you have rankings to protect. Judge us, like any supplier, on the written scope. For our approach, see our web design service. A site that is found also needs search work, which we cover in SEO for small business.

Frequently asked questions
How do I build a website for my small business?
Either use a builder and do the work yourself, or hire a service. Hiring makes sense when the site is a main source of enquiries or needs custom features. Either way, write the goal, list the pages, gather content, then test on a phone before launch.
How much will it cost to design a website?
Design alone is a minority of the cost. For a 5 to 8 page site, the whole project typically costs EUR 1,800 to 9,900, and in our 90-hour example design is about a quarter of the hours. Ask any quote to show design separately from build, content and launch.
How much does it cost to get a website design?
Plan fees start at about USD 48 a year on WordPress.com Personal, about EUR 157 on Squarespace Basic and USD 213 on Wix Light; most small businesses need EUR 150 to 600. A professional 5 to 8 page site typically costs EUR 1,800 to 9,900, a range built from hours and hourly rates.
Is affordable website design worth it?
Yes when the saving comes from a smaller scope, a template or content you supply. No when it comes from skipping phone testing, analytics, redirects or ownership of your domain. Compare quotes on the same written scope.
