How Much Does It Cost to Start a Prop Firm?

Most figures online come from vendors selling the setup. This page separates what is public from what is not, then shows why the payout reserve is the number that matters.

Short answer

There is no reliable public figure for the total. Official Cyprus company fees are only EUR 175, but the real cost sits in legal opinions, technology and a payout reserve that must survive a bad month. In our illustrative model, payouts absorb about 70% of evaluation revenue before any other cost. Build your budget from written quotes.

What is public, and what is not

Only a few costs have a public, checkable number. We looked for named sources in November 2026, and we left out anything we could not trace. Treat any neat total you see elsewhere with suspicion, especially if the author sells setup services.

Vendors are often frank that a quote depends on your setup. Track360 says its pricing depends on brands, partner volume and operations. Zitadelle says it gives an itemised estimate after reviewing your model. That makes sense, since two prop firms can differ in almost every line.

For the Cyprus company itself, our company formation cost guide shows what to budget beyond the official fees.

Why the reserve is the real cost

Your largest cost is what you may owe customers. Evaluation fees arrive first and payouts arrive later, so early cash can look like profit when much of it is a future obligation.

This worked example is illustrative. Its inputs come from a June 2026 Finance Magnates article: a USD 449 starting price for a USD 100,000 account, quoted for one operator, a 7% payout rate from Finance Magnates' study of 300,000 accounts, and an average payout of 4.5% of starting balance, which that same operator cited. These are one operator's claims plus one study, and yours will differ. We also assume one payout per customer, which understates the cost for anyone paid more than once.

Step Figure
Evaluations sold 1,000
Price each USD 449
Revenue USD 449,000
Evaluations that reach a payout, at 7% 70
Average payout, 4.5% of USD 100,000 USD 4,500
Total payouts USD 315,000
Payouts as a share of revenue 70%

Now add other variable costs, again using illustrative rates.

Line USD
Revenue 449,000
Payouts -315,000
Affiliate commission at 15% -67,350
Payment fees at 5% -22,450
Left for everything else 44,200

That USD 44,200 has to cover staff, platform fees, KYC, legal work, support, marketing other than affiliates, and tax. KYC at the list prices above comes to about USD 1,800 to USD 3,600 a year at the monthly minimums. It is small beside the other lines.

Stress test the model

Small changes in behaviour move the result dramatically. Run the same sale at different outcomes.

Payout rate Average payout Total payouts Share of revenue
5% USD 4,500 USD 225,000 50%
7% USD 4,500 USD 315,000 70%
7% USD 6,000 USD 420,000 94%
10% USD 4,500 USD 450,000 100%

So a move from 7% to 10% takes payouts from 70% of revenue to all of it. That is why sizing your funds on an average month is dangerous. Correlated market moves can make many customers profitable at once, and profitable customers are the ones who claim.

Do not respond by quietly tightening rules or making evaluations harder. Consob reported complaints in 2024 that tests were contrived to push players to try again, and a model that depends on that is the one regulators worry about. If the numbers only work when customers fail more often, change the price or the payout terms openly, or do not launch.

How big should the reserve be?

No regulator we found sets a figure for an unregulated prop firm, so this is our suggested rule of thumb. Hold enough to pay every currently eligible account in your stress case, plus three months of fixed costs, in an account you do not spend from.

One operator told Finance Magnates it kept enough cash to run a full year with no revenue. That is a claim about one firm, but it shows how seriously a mature operator treats the risk. Finance Magnates also reported industry estimates of 80 or more prop firm closures during 2024 to 2026.

What changes the budget most?

These decisions move your cost more than any negotiation with a vendor.

Decision Cheaper end Costlier end
Technology Rented white label Custom build
Trading stage Simulated only Live capital, with broker links
Regulation Legal opinion only Own licence, up to EUR 750,000 capital in Cyprus
Markets One language, few countries Several languages, several legal opinions
Payouts Fixed schedule Fast, on demand

Our guide on how to start a prop firm covers the legal questions behind the third row. The legal position is unsettled, so budget for advice more than once, as the rules develop.

What about the website and marketing?

Budget for these separately. A prop firm site needs a clear rule library, company details and several languages, so read what a website should cost before you accept a template. Marketing costs depend on how much you rely on affiliates. Our prop firm marketing guide explains why that dependence needs limits, and our fintech and forex SEO service sets out the organic alternative. We quote in writing.

Next step

Build this model in a spreadsheet with your own prices and rule set, then change the payout rate until the cash runs out. Note that rate. If it sits close to your expected case, the business needs more capital or a different design, and it is far cheaper to learn that now.

Frequently asked questions

How much money do you need to start a prop trading firm?

It depends on your payout exposure, more than on setup fees. Size your funds by modelling a bad month across all active accounts, then add fixed costs. Get written quotes for technology and legal work, since most suppliers do not publish prices.

Can you start a prop firm with no money?

Not responsibly. You could rent technology cheaply, but each evaluation you sell creates a future payout obligation. Without a reserve, customers who earn a payout depend on future sales. That is a poor position legally and commercially.

How much does a prop firm website cost?

That depends on scope. A prop firm site needs a checkout, a rule library, a client area link and several languages, so it costs more than a brochure site. Our website cost guide explains the main price drivers.

How much does a white label prop firm cost?

Vendors rarely publish this, and the affiliate software vendor we checked prices by setup and volume. Ask for setup fees, monthly minimums, per-account charges and revenue share in writing, then compare them at your expected volume.
