How to Build an Ecommerce Website
Building an online shop is a sequence of decisions about what you sell, how you get paid and how you deliver. This guide puts them in order and shows what each one costs.
Short answer
To build an ecommerce website, choose a platform, set up products, payments, shipping and tax, add legal pages that meet EU consumer rules, test checkout on a phone, then launch. Plan fees start near EUR 22 a month on Shopify, and a hired build for up to 100 products typically costs EUR 3,000 to 22,500.
What order should you make the decisions in?
Make them in the order below, because each choice limits the next. A store built platform-first often discovers late that its payment provider, shipping rules or legal pages do not fit.
- What you sell, and where you deliver.
- The platform.
- How you take payment.
- Shipping and returns.
- Tax and legal pages.
- Product pages.
- Checkout testing.
- Launch and measurement.
What are you selling, and where do you deliver?
Write down the number of products, whether each has variants such as size or colour, whether they are physical or digital, and the countries you will ship to. These four facts decide the platform, the build hours and the tax setup. A shop with 30 products delivered in Cyprus is a different project from 800 products shipped across the EU.
In our October 2026 analysis, Google showed about 480 searches a month for "online store cyprus", so demand exists, but search volume is no proof that your product will sell. Test demand cheaply, for example by selling a few lines first. Our guide to selling online in Cyprus covers local conditions.
Which platform should you choose?
Choose by catalogue size and how much of the work you want to run yourself. The prices below were shown by each vendor in November 2026 and change often.
| Situation | Reasonable platforms | Cost to know |
|---|---|---|
| Under about 20 products, simple needs | Wix Core or Squarespace Core store plans | Wix Core was USD 29.77 a month on yearly billing. Squarespace Core was EUR 20.23 a month on annual billing, with 0% store fee |
| 20 to a few hundred products, growth planned | Shopify | Basic EUR 22 a month on annual billing, card rate 1.9% + EUR 0.25 |
| Full control, content-led store, own hosting | WooCommerce on WordPress | Core is free. WooCommerce puts hosting for most stores at USD 25 to 350 a month and paid extensions at USD 29 to 299 a year each |
| Subscriptions, B2B pricing, unusual workflows | Talk to a developer first | Priced by hours |

How do you take payments in Cyprus?
Use a provider that supports Cyprus-based businesses and compare the fee per order. Shopify's Help Center lists Cyprus among the countries for Shopify Payments. WooCommerce's fee page lists a Cyprus card fee of 1.50% + EUR 0.25 for WooPayments, with an extra 2.00% for cards from outside Europe and a EUR 15 dispute fee. Stripe's Cyprus page lists 1.5% + EUR 0.25 for standard European Economic Area cards, 2.8% + EUR 0.25 for premium ones, and no monthly fee.
On a EUR 50 order, 1.5% + EUR 0.25 is EUR 1.00, or 2.0% of the order. Smaller orders pay a higher share because of the fixed part. Also ask your Cypriot bank what card acquiring it offers, so you can compare it with the providers above. Fees and availability change, so confirm on the provider's page before you commit.
How should you handle shipping and returns?
Set shipping zones and rates before you load products, and write the returns process in plain steps. Under EU rules, a consumer buying online has 14 days from delivery of goods to cancel without giving a reason. Since 19 June 2026, EU rules also require a shop that sells online to offer a withdrawal function, labelled "withdraw from contract here" or similar, prominent and available for the whole withdrawal period. The consolidated Cyprus law on CyLaw did not yet show this change when we checked in November 2026, so ask a Cyprus lawyer how it applies, and build it in anyway. Your Europe says the buyer generally pays return postage unless the seller offers to pay or failed to tell them about the cost before the purchase. Exceptions include made-to-order goods, perishable goods and sealed items that were opened. State all this on a returns page and at checkout.
What tax and legal pages does a shop need?
You need a privacy notice, a cookie banner that matches the tracking you use, terms of sale, a returns page, and your trader details. Check whether you must register for VAT: our Cyprus VAT registration guide covers the Cypriot rules, and your accountant should confirm how EU sales are treated. Our GDPR guide for Cyprus business websites covers the privacy side.
Accessibility is a newer duty. The European Accessibility Act covers services provided to consumers from 28 June 2025, so an online shop that launched earlier is not exempt. Your Europe lists online shops as an example of covered services, and Cyprus applies the Act through Law 57(I)/2024. Your Europe also describes an exception for service-based businesses with fewer than 10 employees and under EUR 2 million in turnover, and a separate defence where compliance would be a disproportionate burden. Whether the exception covers your shop is a legal question, so take advice. Building the shop to be usable with a keyboard, with clear labels and sufficient contrast, is good practice either way. This is general information, not legal advice.
How do you build good product pages?
Write each product page as if it were the only page: a clear title, a description in your own words, real photos from several angles, price, delivery time, size or spec information, and returns terms. Use structured data for price and availability. Avoid copying supplier text, because the same description appears on every competing shop.
How do you test checkout before launch?
Place test orders on a phone and a laptop, using the provider's test mode. Check that the confirmation email arrives, that tax and shipping show correctly, that a failed card is handled clearly, and that an order appears where your team will see it. Test a refund too. A checkout step nobody tried can cost you sales from the first day.
What does it cost to build a store?
This example is illustrative. A hired build for 50 products takes about 112 planning hours:
| Task | Hours |
|---|---|
| Plan and structure | 8 |
| Design | 30 |
| Build and theme setup | 30 |
| Product setup, 50 items | 14 |
| Payments, shipping and tax | 8 |
| Checkout testing | 8 |
| Launch and training | 6 |
| Project management | 8 |
| Total | 112 |
At EUR 30 an hour that is EUR 3,360, and at EUR 90 it is EUR 10,080. Platform fees, photography, copy and legal text come on top. The rate band is explained in our website cost guide.
